First thoughts. It’s a poor Minecraft clone it even looks worse, but hay it’s 100 times better than the bug ridden fortresscraft.
After a bit of play it's not that poor. It’s more about digging than building structures above ground.
So far it's the most enjoyable indie game I've played and I've already put more time into this than some of my arcade games.
The Good:
2 player split screen was instantly fun and the best way to play, and it can even go to 4 player local.
In Dig Deep mode there is a lot of crafting (even grenade launchers!), but you need to find blue prints before you can craft an item, an arrow points you to the nearest blue print, a few are above ground but most are below.
Once you find a blue print you can then craft that item or …. Buy it from a shop at great cost.
Thankfully there is a endless supply of wooden pickaxes free from the shop as they wearout fast.
There is a little sideways 2D map in the corner of the screen that gives you a clue what’s in the rock around you.
You can crouch and burrow through one block passages. And double jump (more handy than you‘d think)
Spiders below ground (the only mob I’ve encountered so far) they look terrible but the ear splitting screech is even worse.
Now the best bit and something I wouldn’t mind betting MC will incorporate one day…. Underground tremors. Only happened to me twice in about 4 hours play but very scary, the screen and controller shake and rocks start falling, one of them lasted over a minute! all I could do was quickly dig myself into a hole and hope for the best.
Massive caves, some areas are pre-lit with scattered torches.
You can dig down a long long way.
It only cost a couple of quid. 240 MS points.
The Bad:
Massive caves, some areas are pre-lit with scattered torches. Not sure if pre-lit caves are a good thing or not.
No day & night cycle.
Uses a very stiff blocky figure with no animation at all, even makes the Minecraft block man look good, but you only get to see it in multiplayer.
The world on top is very small without much variety, you can stand in one corner and see across to the other, and when the world ends it’s abruptly with an invisible wall.
Minecraft will be out on the 360 in a few months, if that can do split screen then this wont get loaded again.
