Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
I think I did notice it but it was PSU so didn't have a great deal of interest and forgot about it after seeing it.
I'm saving my cash for a certain free game (Saying that is more fun than saying for a PC) so if it comes out on the PSN Store (The only place I can buy it with a PSP Go) so I wouldn't be buying it for a while anyway.

Nope I waited a week to see if the game would come up on the PSN Store and it hasn't, it's for the best really I don't need another temptation, I've already got Valkyria Chronicals 2 calling out to be from the Store, I have the first game on my PS3 and loved it. It's from SEGA and has Vyse and Aika from Skies of Arcadia as cameos.

Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
Damn Phantasy Star Portable 2 is cheap on the PSN Store this week, it was I think £27/£28 and now it's £13.99 or so it's in the festive offers. I just looked up a bit of gameplay on Youtube and it's exactly like PSU on PC, there's a short gameplay video which looks exactly like PSU PC (Toned down). (Damn sorry just noticed that the video is the first PSU game on PSP)
I'm more interested in Valkyria Chronicles 2 which has also been reduced in price by about the same amount.
Ok I was just watching a video of PSP2 and it does look different to PSU on PC, except the character creation is identical, which is good for a handheld but a bit boring for me, there are only a few new things. There are some enemies which look like they are from PSO (Caves green things with the claws don't remember the name) which is a good thing. And at the start of the game there is a cut scene with a busty woman that tells a guy to get it up.
"Our guest has gotten up! Perhaps you can get it up too?"
I need to find out how long the offer will last since PSP2 is actually different to PSU on PC I may actually get it. There are a lot of things I want at the moment though so I don't really want to spend too much.
Na you know what, I've got too many PSP games that I've not finished I'm going to finish them first (I will get Valkyria Chronicles 2 though).

Ok ok I bought it shut up...
I couldn't resist having a Phantasy Star game in my pocket that I can play online. If I can get my DS to work online I may get the Phantasy Star game on the DS as well.

Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
Ok been playing for a bit now and its fairly decent. I've not done much of the story but what I have done is varied and interesting, I've not got frustrated and skipped any yet anyway. There's a nice little nod and wink to SEGA fans with a cut scene which has a news report called Gurhal Channel 5. The only video I could find was in Japanese, I don't think they even needed the Channel 5 bit, just the look of it would be good enough.
I haven't watched the video myself incase there are spoilers of the storyline, but I doubt anyone on here (Except maybe Mia) will be getting this game.
There are some nice new features as well that I hope will make it into PSO2, enemies block now, damage is reduced on all sides but the back, and you can block as well if you are holding a two handed weapon (Except rods) or the shield same damage rule applies. Also like in PSU you can set different combinations of weapons equiped and switch between them in the pop up thing, in PSP2 you can also have different frames/armour equiped and switch between them in that pop up thing.
A few things have annoyed me, the lock on quite annoyingly unlocks quite often, When a tutorial is about to pop up there is quite a long wait and you can't do anything, the Dragon can shoot fire balls in any direction including out the back of it's head (DON'T YOU DARE MESS UP THE DRAGON SEGA!!!) aiming at boxes can be a bit annoying, there doesn't seem to be a way to lock onto them and you will often keep missing, using a gun and strafing is the best way to do it.
Decent game so far worthy of the Phantasy Star name.

Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
I keep getting the crap scared out of me playing this game, I'm engrossed in the game and earing sound proof earphones because the PSP Go's sound isn't great out of it's speakers. I'm shut in a room on my own with the door closed and then suddenly someone is standing next to me or doing something around me and my heart jumps. I'm used to being able to hear nearly everything and knowing just about everything thats going on.

Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
Kick ass! I was playing earlier and after narrowly beating a boss on a mission I've done a few times now (Maybe not completely solo online though) I was heading back to the ship when I walked onto the warp for what seems to be a random boss, I was using a pish weak character (A new force) and had no chance to beat it, I had no health items at all.
I love the idea of random spawning things on the map and one boss after another is cool. I'm going to play again with a better character to test it out. Expect a disappointed reply when I find out it always happens.

Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
Ha, last night I went through that mission again with a better character, there was no disappointment the boss wasn't there. After that I was playing through another mission late at night and sitting on the loo, with a fairly low battery. I was doing a mission which was in PSU though it was slightly different, I wasn't intending to complete the mission because of the time at night, low battery etc but I did because I was powering through it. It's the Moatoob mission that ends with a load of Kog Nadd's, Mine Defense I think it was.
Any way beat those and was very tired and getting a numb rump from all that sitting, so I was about to head back to the ship and when the door opened there was the boss warp waiting for me. I couldn't resist doing it so I went for it. The boss looks like a giant evil chicken to me.
Took a little while but he wasn't hard to kill, I think he levels up with you so he will always be about as hard to beat no matter what your level.
I'd love to see these random things put into PSO2, it would be freaking awesome. I do like that nothing really changes in the runs of PSO except that you might find a rare monster, but I think I would like the chance of something happening even if it's very rare.
Edit: From the looks of this video he doesn't level up with you he's just the level of whatever mission you are doing. Shame.

Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
HA! There's a costume and hair style that let you make a character that looks like a Power Ranger, originally I was going to change Gunrick into the Green Ranger, but I decided just to make a new character to have fun with RPing as the Green Ranger.
A lot of fun so far, you get a reaction from other players.
You can also write messages that pop up when you do something, or like when you start a mission one might pop up, or if you are AFK for a while. It's like the MAG's talking on PSU. There's no censor on this game either.

*Sings*
We need Mega Dragonzord power now!
*Pew pew, zip, bang, zoom.*
Ok so I've been playing a fair bit now with good old Fenon through the single player game, not been online with him yet. There are a fun couple of missions where you get to play through levels that look like the good old forest and caves, they aren't the same but they are in the same style, you also get to fight the old dragon at the end, except sadly he's more like the old dragons baby, I can't remember if he has the same attacks, I think I beat him too quickly as well, I had leveled up quite a lot in open missions. I'm hoping at some point I'll unlock open missions of some of the old levels or something close to them. Some of the story missions have had slightly different gameplay types, so it's been mixed up a bit.
The story is still ok, really though I would be happier with a PSO level of story. The start of the game is a bit annoying if you are me, you can't skip any of the introduction and it's quite long so making more than one character and going into the single player game is frustrating, you can just play online, but I don't think you can unlock the costumes etc in the shops that way, not that it matters if you play through the story with one char. You get eight character slots and I guess if you need more you can transfer saved files onto a PC and start a new save. I doubt even I'll need to do that (Having said that I do already have 6 chars).
- Spoiler:
Go Green Ranger, go
Go Green Ranger, go
Goldar's gunna get you, tonight
Don't let Lord Zedd, put a spell on your mind
Go Green Ranger, go
Go Green Ranger, go
Go Green Ranger, go go
Go Green Ranger

Go Green Ranger

Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
I'm no PSP expert, I don't think you can download it with a borrowed PSP because you would need their PSN account password etc. Though actually I think you can make your own account on the borrowed PSP but that is going to be linked to that PSP, and you might have trouble getting the game to work on another one (I think it does say that it will work on 3 different PSP's, I think). I wouldn't recommend a PSP Go if you are going to buy one the PSP 3000 would be the way to go (Or one of the older models the 2000 is quite cheap, don't remember the difference), you can also use UMD's with that. I don't know how much onboard storage space there is on the 3000, I think there is only enough for your save files, you would need to buy a memory card (I think M2, thats what the Go uses the others might not) but Phantasy Star Portable 2 is on UMD and if you wanted the first Phantasy Star Portable you can only get that on UMD. The Go does have some very nice features which should become standard for all handhelds, the pause game function is brilliant! You don't need to worry about the battery dying when you are in the middle of a long hard mission (Except if you are doing it online) it uses the last bit of battery to make a quick save.
If you got a PSP Go without a PS3 it would be best to download a program called Media Go (I think it might only work the PSP Go) downloading games etc on the PSP takes forever and there is a good chance of it cancelling itself, I don't usually download anything over 200kb on the Go. I buy and download games etc with the PS3 (Because sometimes if I buy it on the PC it doesn't accept that it's mine on the PS3 and there is no record of it being downloaded on my PS3 account even though it's the same account that I used to download it on the PC).

Re: Phantasy Star Portable 2
Before you buy it you should remember that this is basically PSU with a few gameplay tweaks, the story is nothing thats involving or deep, it's fairly average, which is saying something because I've found stories in RPGs really awful recently (They usually revolve around talking about going to talk about something "but you should rest first" and then talking about something really boring that has no value to the story "We need to talk about our tax returns before you go out on another mission").
I would like to think that this is PSU taking a step towards PSO, which encourages me for the future release of PSO2, of course I could just think that because it's PSU toned down to the graphic level of PSO (I like those graphics). I am surprised just how much of PSU is in this game, the character creation is exactly the same, it's not toned down for handhelds at all. The missions are just the right size, they aren't too short but don't drag on too long either, you can't walk around on the planet unless you are doing a mission (Like PSO) the only area you can do that is the ship, which isn't huge but is just about the right size, I have never wished it was bigger (It's a bit smaller than Pioneer 2 was). Combat is the real winner here though, I really liked PSU's combat system and this improves on it, you now have a forward roll to get out of danger and the blocking thing that I talked about in an earlier post. The only thing I'm not sure about with combat is the stamina bar, I'd rather the guns and techs had nothing to do with it, guns should have ammo (Would be really cool if ammo belts etc appeared on your char) and techs should use TP, stamina should just be for melee attacks. If they did that, this would be the perfect combat system. There are plenty of little ways to tweak your char's stats and abilities, you can upgrade weapons though you can't break them, which I suppose is good (But not as much fun as hearing that DS9 has broken all his weapons and wasted loads of cash trying too hard to upgrade them). There's also a nice player stats section where you can look at what you've done and usefully you can see how many rare weapons out of the possible rare weapons you have collected.
I've found a few rares (Ones from PSO actually), I have no S-Ranked weapons yet (Which reminds me, this game has a challenge mode) I've only just got into the A ranks, PSU really was crap with its rare's they either weren't rare or you could just buy them on the auction house (Hope thats not in PSO2) taking away the joy of finding rares which was a major part of PSO's fun, also PSU's rares weren't as cool as PSO's. There are quests in this game (Not sure about online I'll look that up) but they are like mission's given to you by 4 NPC's in the cafe, they aren't that great but you do get more from them than just doing open missions.
Anyway just wanted you to know it's a good game but it's not the second coming of PSO'sus, if you do get it I would love to play online with ya.

Thanks fen, it’s probably not worth the expense for one game, and I’m not a big enough fan of handhelds to consider other titles, and I do have PS0 on the DS.
I’m just getting that PSO yearning that hits once in a while.
