Any recommendations for about £500 - £600? I'm not looking for high end gaming but wouldn't mind something that looked a bit better than an xbox 360.

play.com has quite a decent layout with a varied selection in that range.
One thing that suprised me when looking online for computers was that they don't all come with OS which struck me as barking mad.

pre built. my tool box consists of a lump hammer and a couple of rusty scaffold spanners.

See what you mean about play. Looks plenty of good options. Not sure about no OS though.
