    Mafia 2

Post by Fenon on Fri Mar 11, 2011 8:56 am

I got this yesterday, decent game. Looks really good, though there really aren't many graphical settings, you can either turn AA on or off, thats it. I think thats because they meant the game to be for consoles not PC. Ok lets compair it to GTA4, this game looks better, the city isn't as big may even be less than a third as big. The city has some life, you never know whats going to be happening outside your apartment the land lord lady maybe listening at someones door or there might be a drunk lying there. The sounds of the city are different from day to day. Oh important this game isn't like GTA in that it's on rails your day only ends when you've done your missions, you can travel around the city but it's really just a back drop to the story, it's not really a true sand box. Going back to graphics, the clothes have a nice movement to them.

Story, well GTA4 does have a good story as GTA games usually do with funny characters etc, but they are kind of the same in each game, I mean at their core and the reasons for doing missions is always the same. Ok in Mafia 2 all of the characters are cliche, every one of them. For me thats ok because I rarely watch anything that about the mafia and I don't own any games about it. The characters are likeable as well and there are some funny missions.

I love the time period of this game, the look of the cars the music, the clothes, all of it's awesome. It was a very rich time with lots of potential for a game like this..

There is no multiplayer in the game and I don't know how long the singleplayer is. I'm playing on the hardest setting right now, but other than maybe having a more realistic amount of health, that gets me killed a bit easier it's really not that hard, I've only really died from doing something stupid like bum rushing the enemy, driving badly or when the enemy have got a lucky shot off and one hit killed me. It's not overly easy I should say, but I've not felt like I was playing on the hardest setting, I've not tried easy so maybe there is a big difference.

This game is definately worth getting, however if it's a short game it should only be bought if it's cheap, if it's long yeah it's worth full price. Not a problem now since it's been out for a while.

Oh there's one annoying thing, maybe it's just because of my mini keyboard but the left control button is used a lot in this game and it's right next to that button which takes you back to your desktop. In other games I've played which use that button they disabled the return to desktop button so if you hit it by accident which I do because it's not easy for me to get to that button you get taken out of the game, and chances are when you are using that button it's in combat and you really don't want to be taken out. Oh the button makes you take cover, sorry should have said that earlier.

Something funny happened to me yesterday, I had to drive a van without damaging it so I started driving slowly and then decided to turn the limiter on which stops your car going over the speed limit. I took my eyes off the road for a moment to do that and slowly drove into a stack of boxes on the curb, I knocked a few over but my van rolled onto it's side... The mission failed there, I was driving like 5 miles an hour...

The roads make you feel like the have laws, in GTA as long as you don't hit a cops car or kill someone the police don't care what you do. But in this if you hit any other cars and I don't know about objects like lamp posts, the police come after you. If you speed they do as well, I've not seen if they chase you if you go through a red light, I don't think they do but if other characters are in your car they will take note of you going through the red light, they should really make the police chase you if you run the red.

Oh slight warning if you have kids etc this game has some adult content like bad language and also a bit of nudity, there are collectable playboy posters for example.

I have never felt so motivated to collect art work, or anything else for that matter in a game. Only problem is you can't access it ingame you need to quit and go to the main menu, so like it's hard to want to get past the menu and go into the actual game.

Grrr I'm on a bit which is really p**sing me off, there's no place which is safe because even though there is cover one of the enemies is lobbing molotov cocktails at me which goes through cover, can't really move around because there are a load of guys shooting at me all the time, and can't advance because the fire hits the stairs all the time. I could handle that on it's own but the check points are crap on this game, maybe not on easy sometimes games reduce the check points on hard. I get sent basically back to the start of the mission thankfully not back to the long slow walk, but the last time I was stuck at a point like this I did have to do a long slow walk every damn time.

Check points are the only thing I'm not happy with in the game, really fecking annoying. If they are better on easy or normal I would definately play that. Having no check points doesn't make the game harder it makes it more bloody annoying.

Oh gawd damn, I killed the two guys I had to kill and my character started talking and two jerks sneaked down the stairs and killed me when I was reloading. So pissed off now, I keep having to redo this nearly whole mission. I try a few times and then rage quit. I hate this mission... it should be fun because I'm killing a guy I don't like.

Ha, I finally got past that bloody mission! It has taken me all day, not continueous I should say, but 3-4 attempts everytime I got over the frustration. Used a rifle with a small amount of ammo to get the guy, I didn't use it to begin with because there are so many guys coming at you with guns blazing I didn't think it was a good idea to use something that fires one shot at a time and has few bullets per round. I think if I didn't get the head shot on the gun early on I would have had trouble with that rifle.

On a mission now where I want to get out of a building fast, but not so fast that I can't take a good look around for porn mags. Lifes endanger but I'll just take a little look around for some boobies. It is really weird searching for skin mags in a game, it's good, I like looking at naked ladies before and after a bit of gaming, but umm my priorities in the game are a bit messed up now, it goes find bunny mags > complete my objective in the game. Doesn't help that the mags are locked to the chapters so if you miss them you can't go back and get them even if you can go to the exact place they were, they won't be there any more. I think Po.ppy hacks the games and steals them for his collection, curse you Pop.py.

Oh there are also wanted posters with mafia guys on them, they are photos of real people but I don't know if they are photos of real mafia guys or maybe a joke with the guys that made the game being in the photos. I would guess real. But you know who cares about that? The only reason I have any of the want posters at all was because I was hunting for bunny, and picked them up because they were there.

I'm guessing this is just because of my difficulty but I die so easy now, sometimes anyway, it can be very frustrating you start a mission and the very first shot kills you. You might be running for the first bit of cover and then boom you die before you can do anything about it, this was really annoying on that mission I was stuck on. You get really far into a hard mission and one stray bullet ends it. I don't know if you can tell but I don't usually play on hard.

Well finished this game and right on time as well, getting Shogun 2 today I hope so I may have ended up either never finishing this or doing it when I'm not completely sure what my motives were at the end of the game.

The DLC is like the GTA4 DLC, it fills in areas of the game that weren't really explained. I doubt it's done as well as GTA4's. I quite like this DLC because you see what you were doing in the game from someone else's point of view and just as a passing thing that doesn't really have anything to do with you any more. It's more like a cameo.

The end of the game is good, there's not as much punch to it as there could be but its left open so maybe Mafia 3 will continue from the end of this game rather than starting with a new person as the main character.

There are a fair few mods which add a few new clothes to the game as well but really I don't think it's worth getting for this kind of game because you aren't going to play it that many times, maybe only once.

There are 4 clothing/car dlc's each are £1.99 unless this is like your favourite game ever I wouldn't suggest bothing with them. However the Batman car is in the Vegas one and that car is always worth getting, it's the best car in the world ever. I'm sure it would be the only car you ever see of Top Gear if they were allowed to just have that car.

The two story DLC though I think are worth getting for this type of game. I don't know if these ones are any good, but Mafia 2 is good so I would say that it's a good chance that they are.

I took a look at the mods for Mafia 2 as well and there are only a few that are good, I expected more that would add clothes, weapons and vehicles. They are only retextures and not really good ones.

There is a nude mod, which I know is a bit pervy but it's a bit dumb that there are nude photos of real women but the ingame whores walk around in granny pants, well ok there as 1 whore that had her ass out but thats all. I think it's a good thing that people make nude mods when the developers wimp out of putting in this adult content into their games when their games involve adult subjects. Like Dragon Age Origins, it lets you have sex with other characters but as one of the guys from the Yogscast put it Morrigan was wearing more clothes when she was having sex than she did for the whole game. I'm not going to download this mod any way, in the description it says it makes all women in the game naked which is taking the while thing too far, fixing the lameness of developers is one thing but making the game into a porno is quite another, I have the internet for that and the nude photos that are already in the game, thank you. I will when I get Dragon Age Origins though.

There are a few mods like changing the game to first person and adding a free roam mode but that gives you everything in the game and I can't say I want everything.

This isn't half as bad as I first thought it was, but for some reson I can only play it on the telly as I get massive screen tearing on the monitor, just can't figure out why, both at the same Rez both 60hz both are LG products, there running in duel mode so both displaying the same image. Odd can't get my head around it. Neutral

Cured the game defaults to 70hz I just had to force 60hz in the steam launch options. still doesn't explain why it worked on the tv.

Forcing HZ wasn’t the end of it, and in the end unnecessary, As in my stupid head I never considered switching off the duel monitor mode, I’ve always had it on as technically it’s supposed to be a media centre.

Now that I have it runs as smooth as a smooth thing covered in baby oil drinking a smoothie, I actually had a wow! This looks awesome moment at night with all the reflections going on.
I’m liking the story so far even the slower driving, it makes a nice brake from GTA. And I don’t know why I was winging about the cut scenes I think there pretty good.

Loving this, especially the way the music and cars changed after doing time, much prefer the 50’s music compared to the 40’s.

I think the gun battles and fist fighting are done really well, it has a nice intuitive cover system you never feel pined to cover like you do in some games, Rockstar would do well to copy this.

I gave the 360 demo a go and pleased to say it’s as good, (though it mixes an early mission with the later cars & music) only lacking a little graphical detail, it even attempts to mimic the Phisx, with wood and shrapnel flying everywhere though I think the clothes were static.

So would def recommend this on any format, it’s a little gem and was probably overshadowed by bigger releases last year, Probably the most enjoyable game I’ve played so far this year.

Oh and fully compatible with the 360 controller, it detects it and changes the button icons appropriately.

I'm fairly sure the game was designed for consoles and ported to PC because of the lack of graphic options.

You’re probably right, even so it does look more polished and a little sharper on PC.
I’d say download and try the Ps3 demo but I wouldn’t want to rub salt into the wound. lol!

Did this mission last night, yes it was hard even on normal difficulty, the check point was in the shed just after the big revival about Vito’s father.

I even tried driving to the back of the warehouse but still got burnt coming out of cover, In the end I just rushed the stairs before the molotov’s started and took cover behind a pillar, took a few tries but once I knew where the mobs were coming from it was quite easy, or I got a lucky shot.

It wasn’t until afterwards I realised I had grenades I could of lobed up there, I’ve been carrying them since an earlier mission and forgotten about them, that’s probably how it’s supposed to be done.

So near the end now I don’t want it to finish.

Well the ending was a bit of a shock but not in a Red Dead way, more disappointment than surprise.

Good game. Hope there's a third on the way.
