Ok lets say I'm looking to spend between £500 to £1000 on a gaming tower what should I be looking at to get the best I can for that price/

What about over cooked pcs, is there a danger to them i.e. burning out quick?

Graphics cards etc confuse me quite a lot with all the blah blah blah that means nothing to me after their name.

The one at £839 looks fine to me. I've got a Dell xps with an Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33 Ghz (whatever that is), 3 gig of ram and an ATI Radeon HD 4800. I'ts hardly cutting edge but it plays wow and Dragons Age at a pretty decent rate.

Post by Fenon Sat Sep 04, 2010 12:21 pm

Got a new mouse today and I freaking love it, its really tiny which isn't good but its a laser mouse and I can use it on the sofa without any trouble, the last mouse needed a none reflective flat surface and was a bit of a pain for makeshift mouse mats (Like a piece of A4 paper on a book). Also the old mouse had to be able a meter away from the TV and this new one can be 10m away and has a power saving sleep function so if I walk away and forget to turn it off which I sometimes do, the battery isn't being wasted. So I'm one step closer to a perfect set up, just need to save up for that PC.

Anyway, I'd like to know what specs everyones pc's are, Darkstone and Vis's mostly.

Got the cost down to £1370 was around £2000

Here's the spec I'm thinking about, may change when I actually buy it.

    overclocked Krypton i7 920 2.80GHz @ 4GHz

    Corsair XMS3 (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel

Corsair CWCH50-1 Cooling Hydro Series H50

    Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R or Asus P6X58D-E (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard

evga gtx 460 1gb (lots of different versions of the 460 got to work out which is the best to get, may also upgrade it to sli at some point)

    corsair 850w

    windows 7 64 bit

Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache (May upgrade this to the 600gb, 32mb version)

Post by Fenon Tue Sep 21, 2010 11:08 pm

Changed the title of the topic, thought this might be better.

This is the PC that I'm fairly sure I'll be getting and *gulp* building myself.

    Intel i7 930 2.80ghz overclocked to 4ghz
    Corsair H50-1 High-Performance CPU Watercooler
    Corsair XMS3 (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Triple Channel
    Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache (Going to upgrade to a SSD later next year)
Corsair HX 750W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
Gainward GeForce GTX 460 GS 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (I'll buy another one and Sli them a few months after buying the PC)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
    Coolermaster Storm Scout Gaming Case
OcUK Value 300Mbps Wireless-N PCI Adapter
    40" HDTV 3D Ready 1920 x 1080 rez

£1,218.95 the TV isn't included in the price or it would be close to £2100 and nor is the SSD or the second graphics card. I'm waiting for the 3rd gen of SSD's to come out before I buy one. I'm not getting a sound card yet either, I'm told that the onboard sound has improved a lot and that I should try it first. Might get more fans as well when I attempt to Sli.

The graphics card supports stereoscopic 3D as well so I'll be able to play 3D PC games, its not something I planned but hey if you have it why not. It seems Phantasy Star Universe is 3D Ready... yay... But maybe PSO2 will be and thats a YAY YEAH!!!! WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Warhammer 40K DoW (So is DoW2 but thats a meh) is 3D Ready as well. So are Napoleon TW and Empire TW (Perhaps Shogun2 will be).

The spec may change based on whats around at the time I buy this, if I can get something better for the same price I will.

Hmm slight change, the bundle I'm getting has changed itself, anyway it appears I'm getting and overclocked 4ghz i7 950 cpu instead of a i7 930 overclocked to 4ghz cpu. No idea what the difference is other than the number, I suppose it must be better, if anyone knows the difference please let me know. I didn't choose to have this cpu, but I suppose I shouldn't complain, its I guess better and the same price.

    Another change:

Krypton Black OPS Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz @ 4.20GHz Original Edition Overclocked Bundle:

    Bundle Specification
    - CPU: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz @ 4.20GHz
    - Motherboard: Asus X58 Sabertooth (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
    - RAM: Corsair Dominator (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Triple Channel
    - Cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems CPU Cooler w/ x2 Akasa Apache Black 120mm Fans
    - Artic Cooling MX-3 Thermal Compound

    EVGA GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Corsair TX 850W ATX SLI Compliant Power Supply

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Cubitek Tattoo Fire Midi-Tower Windowed Case (If when it comes out it gets good reviews, really nice looking though)

Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache

OcUK Value 300Mbps Wireless N USB Adapter

Sony Optiarc AD-5260S 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black)

Total: £1,279.56 with next day delivery.

Could still change I've been convinced to wait till Feb and there are still a few new graphics cards coming out the GTX 560 weaker than the 570 but it's more affordable to get two 560's. And the ATI 6900 series which will likely be too expensive for me.

Crap... Windows 7 is about £13 cheaper than usual today (Only 18 or so copies being sold at that price though) I was going to buy it but there's no free postage... and with the cheapest postage it's only about £6 cheaper.

    I'm sad now.

I've just got a 23" monitor. I thought it was a bit much at first but I've got used to it now. Wow looks great and my PC seems to handle the bigger resolution fine. I've hooked my 360 up to as well and that looks great too. Smile

I have a 40" but actually because I'm sitting so far back its actually a smaller screen than the 23", my laptops screen is about 13" and that sometimes looks big compaired to the TV. I think after a few months I may get a smaller more personal monitor, the TV is more of a social gaming thing, which isn't really what PC's are for, except over the net. I do like sitting on the sofa gaming though.

When I first read 23" I thought that sounded small but I took out a tap measure and it really is big.

Delivery people are screwing with me today, had a package arrive this morning which was from my point of view the same shape as the PC case turned out it was something else... Then a few hours later a delivery van arrived, thought it might have been one of those supermarket home delivery things first but then I stood up and saw it was delivering packages. It pulled up next to where I live and... went next door... I checked the order tracking and it looks like it will arrive between 2:30 and 3:30, which sucks but at least I don't have to look out the window every five minutes. What does suck is that I won't be able to start working on it till I get home from work at nearly 9pm... Chances are by the time it's all been put together I'll have to go to work again.

Post by Fenon Tue Jan 11, 2011 10:42 pm

Oh sorry yeah it arrived, it was like Christmas for me last night, sorry I've been using all of my time trying to put it together, I was working on it till 2am last night and started again at 7:30 this mornin. When I went to sleep last night I had finished installing the parts except the CPU cooler, this morning I installed that then started wiring it up which was the hard part because I watched loads of videos about installing the bits but nothing about the wiring, I had no idea what I was doing and by the time I was finished with everything I had to go to work again, so I've only just been able to test and see if it works. It's guts are still hanging out the back of the case because I didn't want to try cable management before I was sure it worked (Didn't want to undo it all).

Anyway got back tonight and finally got to turn the power on, ... nothing happened... so I looked at the back of the case and found that the PSU was off, I must have had it on before and turned it off by mistake, I tried again and it started and is working perfectly! That is except for the overclock I was supposed to have had, it doesn't show me as having one. I'll need to look into that, maybe I just need to turn something on in the BIOS. If thats not it I'll be contacting Overclockers to find out whats going on. I've installed Windows 7 which looks like Windows XP to me, I think I like the look of Vista more and right at this moment my PC is updating, the security and anti virus, after that I may install a game and see how it runs with something like that. I'll have to manage those cables too and try out the 3D function and get directx 11.

Vis try Overclockers I've found them to be fairly cheap.

Yeah, an interesting experience, not sure I would want to repeat it, but at least I know whats everything is. The CPU was supposed to have been overclocked for me to 4.2ghz but I'm not seeing that yet.

Oh palit included a stupid mini-hdmi to hdmi adapter with the GTX 570, I can't plug it into my graphics card because it's too wide and the case is in the way, I'm going to write a review on Overclockers about it, I had to order one off Amazon and I'm borrowing one right now.

Never! I shall continue to be annoyed until Microsoft cave in and change it.

I called Overclockers today and yeah my CPU is overclocked, it just doesn't show the overclock in CPU-Z untill you are actually doing something the multiplier went upto x24 and the cpu speed? or bus speed? went up to 4205 Mhz which I suppose is the 4.2Ghz overclock.

I still haven't got S3D to work, except briefly with RoM which just messed the screen up, dividing up some parts but not all. I thought it was a kick ass new effect at first.

I ran 3dMark Vantage today on the free trial and got a P25823 3dMark. I don't know what it means... I saw a guy doing it when he reviewed graphics cards. I'm going to have a go at overclocking my graphics cards and see what difference that makes to the score.
